God Has Spoken by His Son

Gary Hampton

God speaks today through His only begotten Son of God (Hebrews 1:2). The importance of the message is seen in the messenger. God declared Him to be His Son and planned for Him to receive the nations as an inheritance (Psalm 2:7–8). Jesus’ Sonship and glory were attested to by the Father at His baptism (Matthew 3:13–17). The nations are subject to Him and worship Him (Psalm 22:22–27).

God made the worlds by His Son (John 1:1–5, 14). Jesus’ purpose on earth was to do the work of His Father (John 9:4). Everything in the universe stands by His power (Hebrews 1:3). All was put in motion by Him and remains because of His power. Our Lord shined forth with the essence of the glory of His Father (Colossians 1:15). He is His “express image” of His person like the exact imprint of a seal in wax.

Neil Lightfoot, in Jesus Christ Today, said “upholding all things by the word of His power” refers to Jesus’ responsibility for the “providential government” of the universe and His direction of its destiny. He is our Redeemer (John 3:16–17). Jesus was made a purification for our sins. He exercised His priestly office in offering His own blood in sacrifice for our sins. We put away our sinful lives when we participate in the likeness of His death, burial, resurrection and begin to live a new life (Romans 6).

The Lord told His disciples He was going to be with the Father. He planned to build a place for His people and to come to take them back there with Him (John 14:1–6). The writer of Hebrews declared, with the Psalmist (110:1), that Jesus is on the right hand of God in Heaven. Other writers joined in that declaration (Ephesians 1:20; Colossians 3:1; 1 Peter 3:21–22). The Master’s place at God’s right hand is the reason Christians hope for Him to come again to receive us (Hebrews 9:28).
