One of the chief reasons why I place my confidence in the existence of God, in His creative involvement in the entire universe and in the Bible is because it makes sense. It makes sense especially in contradistinction to any and all alternative views regarding God, the universe and the Bible.
It makes sense that an eternal, intelligent and superpowerful Being has always existed and will always exist. Something had to exist first, since nothing begets nothing. Furthermore, something also had to cause the universe, including you and me, to come into existence. Persons not willing to admit the existence and the power of Almighty God may argue that it’s matter that has always existed. However, lifeless matter by itself could never be responsible for what exists in the physical world because (1) our experience with matter is that it breaks down rather than regenerates itself or generates anything else, meaning that matter is not eternal, (2) matter by itself lacks a cause by which the universe could come into existence, (3) lifeless matter lacks the intelligence to create the intricately designed universe, from the galaxies and solar systems to the complexities of the human body.
The eternal, intelligent and superpowerful Being Who has always existed and Who will always exist is God. By the word “God,” we mean divine attributes or characteristics, which are shared by three persons—God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Think of it this way. Over eight billion persons comprise the human race, while three persons comprise the God race. Billions of people in the human race share a host of similarities, which far outweigh dissimilarities. On the other hand, three divine persons share the quality of being God; they chiefly differ in their respective roles.
In the next place, the very existence of the Bible defies any supposition that it is merely of human design. The Bible is the most authenticated ancient manuscript that has ever existed. There are many thousands of partial and complete manuscripts in the original languages in which the Bible was scribed, hundreds of ancient copies of the Bible in multiple languages and a large amount of ancient biblical quotations in secular literature, all of which confirm that the Bible text has survived or has been preserved over all the centuries after it was first received.
Secondly, about 40 human penmen over up to 1,600 years, from various academic backgrounds and who were unknown to each other, in the course of 66 Bible books and claiming as well as demonstrating that they were divinely inspired, composed a harmonious and non-contradictory volume. In addition, hundreds of prophecies, made from hundreds to thousands of years before the events and people predicted, were completely fulfilled. That is far beyond the capability of uninspired humans. If the Bible were a jigsaw puzzle consisting of thousands of pieces, it would be a puzzle that is not missing a single puzzle piece; everything in the Bible fits together to present a complete picture of God, human history, Bible doctrine and God’s plan for human redemption.
Within the Bible, one finds God’s plan for mankind’s eternal habitation in Heaven with Him. Since God is the Creator, He gets to outline the dos and don’ts for humans to follow in their lives. Violating God’s instructions results in a breach of fellowship between Him and humankind. Ultimately, God, through the action of the Holy Spirit and through the ministry of Jesus Christ, provided a way that man could recover his fellowship with God, and at the same time without God having to compromise His holiness. The fall of mankind into sin and the hopelessness of man being unable to resolve his sin problem and restore fellowship with God fortunately led Almighty God to provide the remedy. All of this makes sense and offers the only resolution for restoration of fellowship with God and the hope of spending eternity in Heaven.
It makes sense that God exists! It makes sense that God is the Creator Who is responsible for both creation and the sustaining of all that has been created. It makes sense that our Creator left us a road map to prepare to meet God on the Last Day. It makes sense that by way of the Bible, God left an operator’s manual for divinely authorized conduct while we live on the Earth, preceding the commencement of eternity. It makes sense that there exist two and only two eternal destinations that will be populated by those who conformed in this life (obeyed, rather than sinless perfection) versus those who were disobedient to God while on the Earth. Accountable souls, from the beginning of creation through the present and through as many years as God may allow time to continue, fall into one of two classes or groups—unforgiven sinners and forgiven sinners. In which group do you see yourself, and if you don’t like how you picture yourself, what are you going to do about it?
