“Worldview,” according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, means, “a comprehensive conception or apprehension of the world especially from a specific standpoint.” There exist many worldviews, some of which are antagonistic to each other and still more that exist side by side but differing in categorization. There are political worldviews relative to a nation or nations, a hemisphere, or the entire world. Other worldviews pertain to cultures, philosophies, theories, science or religion. Each person prioritizes worldviews in his or her own mind from most cherished to least valued. Even worldviews that can rightfully coexist must undergo an ordering process from more important to lesser importance.
The Christian’s worldview, based on what God through the Bible conveyed, must subjugate all other worldviews beneath it. Yet, often even Christians and the churches of Christ struggle with placing the Christian’s worldview above and foremost before all other worldviews.
Just what are some of the characteristics of the Christian’s worldview? Well, first, spiritual matters surpass physical considerations (Matthew 6:33). That’s hard to achieve—very hard to do—in view of our physical existence in the physical world and universe (John 6:27). Irrespective of in what nation or under what form of government the children of God may live, Christians must obey the laws of the land (Romans 13:1–7), except on the occasions when there is a direct conflict between what man demands of us and what Almighty God would have us to do or not to do (Acts 5:28–29).
Christians must embrace the worldview that puts God’s viewpoint on all things, applicable in these present times, ahead of anyone or anything else. That worldview trumps worldviews based in politics, systems of government, race, ethnicity, nationality, culture, human tradition, education, economics, man-made religions, etc. The Christian’s worldview primarily involves salvation, Christian worship, Christian service and daily Christian living. What is the paramount worldview dominating your life (1 Corinthians 13:5)?
