The Shepherd’s Sufficiency

David Myers

I recently read of a man who had been very successful in the business world but who was very unhappy. His hypertension caused him to be under constant medical care. Finally, his doctor sent him to see his minister for spiritual and emotional advice. After listening to this man, the minister prescribed reading Psalm 23 five times each day. This Psalm was to be read slowly and with concentration when he awoke each morning, after breakfast, after lunch, after supper and before going to sleep at night. The reason the minister had him do such, five times a day, is because David’s Psalm instills within the reader a pattern of thinking that is very powerful. It contains a positive, hopeful and faith approach to one’s life โ€“ that is, we have a God who is sufficient to meet our needs.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said long ago, “A man is what he thinks about all day long,” which is what Proverbs 23:7 says. David’s shepherd Psalm is a powerful weapon against a devastating human emotion we all experience โ€“ fear. This emotion is one of the most common emotions with which we deal often โ€“ the fear of loss, the feeling of loneliness and the fear of not having life’s necessities. David tried to impress upon the children of God how much He cares for them.

If you are like the man mentioned above, why not take the minister’s advice and read David’s shepherd Psalm five times a day for the next 30 days. This shepherd Psalm is indeed full of hope, faith and a positive approach to life. The first three verses describe the blessed relationship God wants with us and the remaining three verses show the results of this relationship. Why are you waiting? Start reading, and you will be glad you did!
