Several years ago, Sarah and I were given a tour of New York City by Sarah’s sister, Martha. During that visit, I experienced a taxi ride that I will never forget. The driver seemed determined to demonstrate his skills and daring in negotiating the traffic congestion of the big city. He went careening down busy streets, making abrupt turns, nearly sideswiping a bicycle rider and coming to a screeching stop. I was so glad that the taxi ride was over. What made the ride so much more horrifying was the fact that I sat in the front seat! There were moments when I thought my ride was going to end in the cemetery.
What makes these kinds of experiences so frustrating and fearful is you don’t have control, and you feel like your life is in unreliable hands. As I sit here thinking about that experience, it reminds me of our human tendency to want to be in charge of everything. We become nervous whenever we feel that control of our lives is out of our hands.
As believers in a sovereign God, we know that we need to yield to Him as the God of the universe. As Christians, we need to learn how to relax in Him and believe that He can handle anything that He allows to come into our lives.
Wisdom tells us that we need to plan and live responsibly, but we must also recognize that God is in control (Psalm 24:1; Proverbs 16:9; James 4:13-17). When it comes to riding in a taxi, whether I’m in New York City, Guyana, South America or in Wildwood, Florida, I will always be glad to be in His hands. Thank God that He is on His throne!
