Go Straight!

By Ernest S. Underwood

Image Occasionally we see something in our everyday activities that calls to mind a great and powerful spiritual lesson. Such was the case recently with me. Someone was having a yard sale or something. There were signs posted along the route to that effect. At one intersection was the sign "Go Straight." Think of those words for a moment. What excellent council to give to a young man or young woman--"Go Straight!" The writer of the Book of Hebrews made a similar statement: "Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight paths for your feet, let that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed"(Hebrews 12:12-13). Solomon said, "Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established" (Proverbs 4:26).

How can one be absolutely sure that he is "going straight" spiritually? As one reads Matthew 7:13-14, he is made keenly aware of the need to go straight. The Lord has not left us to grope in darkness, but has given us in plain language the answer to the question. Consider the following passages: "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way" (Psalm 37:23). "I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies" (Psalm 119:59). "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105). "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word"(Psalm 119:9).

In each of the foregoing passages, it is made abundantly clear that if one would "go straight" he must walk according to the Word of God. The evolutionist has taught our children that there is no God, and parents haven't had enough interest to teach their children about God at home; therefore, these children have acted like the animals they have been taught that they are. How many killings and shootings would have been eliminated if these precious young people had been told the truth about God--he created you, and you have a responsibility to him?

We notice two other passages that tell us of our walk: "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called" (Ephesians 4:1). In this passage, the child of God is admonished to walk (live a life) according to that which he was called, namely, the Gospel. Then again: "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin" (I John 1:7). Here, we are given the area in which to walk--light (truth)--and the reward of such a walk--the cleansing from sin. Are you walking straight--have you learned, then obeyed the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ?

["He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved..." (Mark 16:16). "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins..." (Acts 2:38). "And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord" (Acts 22:16). "The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ" (1 Peter 3:21). ~ Editor]Image
